Usenet Myths

Blog

Blogs and forums are a form of Usenet.

Myth: Usenet is hard to use.

Usenet is no more difficult to use than email or web-based message boards, it simply takes patience.

At its core, Usenet is a system to send and receive messages just like email is; the difference is that email is meant for one-to-one communication (a single sender to a single recipient) whereas Usenet is meant for one-to-many communication, similar to web-based message boards. In fact, it's probably easiest to think of Usenet as a fusion of email and message boards.

In order to access Usenet, you need service from a Usenet provider. In most cases, your internet service provider can also provide Usenet service. There are also premium Usenet services that charge for access. In any event, accessing newsgroups starts with pointing your news reader to your Usenet server – just like you would supply your email server to an email client. From there, you choose which newsgroups to read regularly by 'subscribing' to them. After that, reading newsgroups is extremely similar to reading message boards.

Usenet has its own specialized jargon, but much of it has crossed over into other internet communities, so the average internet user shouldn't find Usenet too foreign. Many people use terms and expressions in emails and on message boards that originated on Usenet without even realizing their origin.

In the end, Usenet is no harder to use than other internet services. Choosing the right service provider and news client for your needs can also ensure the smoothest experience possible.
